All credits to the debutant director Dileesh Pothan and the screenwriter Syam Pushkaran, Maheshinte Prathikaaram is one of the most satisfying movies of the decade.
The title song is actually an introduction to the day to day life in and around the Idukki district, which suggests that Idukki itself is a character in the movie. Mahesh (Fahadh Fasil) is a photographer who owns a small studio named Bhavana. He is not an expert in his field, but anyway inherited the studio from his father. He is still in love with his childhood crush Soumya (Anusree) and everybody in the village is well aware of this. Two unexpected incidents and after effects change his life forever. Slowly the narration shifts gears and changes its course.
Shyju Khalid’s cinematography, Ajayan Chalissery’s art works, Saiju Sreedharan’s seamless cuts, Sameera Saneesh’s Costumes and Bijipal’s compositions deserve big round of applause. Also, this is undoubtedly Syam Pushkaran’s best yet. Usually in Malayalam movies, comedy scenes/sequences are added for the sake of giving a notion that movie is an entertainer. But, the humor showcased in Mahesh is unique and subtle. Even the sentimental scenes are concluded with a tinge of honest humor. The long seamless humor sequence on the chain reaction that is triggered when someone pries into others’ affairs, is unforgettable.
Each and everyone in the cast has done justice to their roles. Especially Fahadh Fasil, Anusree, Aparna Balamurali, Soubin Sahir, Alencier Ley, Lijomol Jose, Jaffer Idukki, Dileesh Pothan, Sujith Shankar and many other talented newbies (whose name we couldn’t find). Dileesh Pothan’s Post Graduations in Theatre Arts have helped him a lot in casting fresh faces it seems.
Aashiq Abu’s home production (and distribution) banner OPM Dream Mill Cinemas produced Maheshinte Prathikaaram. Dileesh has served as the associate director in most of the Aashiq Abu films, and he is so confident about Dileesh. Else why would he agree to fund the project even before the initial stages of the screenwriting.
It is one such movie with impeccable humor content, which will put smiles on your face for sure. What are you waiting for, book the tickets and grab some popcorn.
